Memoirs Of Geisha

I just visited the cinema on a Sunday for a peak preview of Memoirs of a Geisha. My First movie of the year! It was a rather nice show, but I felt that I busted 9.50 for a movie is not quite worth it. I also went to the nearest NTUC and bought myself 2 bottles of green tea. What the tea was for shall be kept to the end of this film review.

Nice show, 4 out of 5 stars. I would even go as far as 4.5. 5 ratings are for perfect and there rarely are perfect movies nowadays.
This film is an adaptation from the popular novel. It follows the story of a young girl from humble origins in a fishing village, how she was sold off to the red lantern district. (Editors note: They used lanterns in the old days) To be truthful, when the movie started and there was the sea, I thought it was another Carlsberg commercial.
The girl is separated from her sister and cast away to become a geisha. After meeting the bigger sister from hell there (also one of the most wanted geisha out there), our heroine falls prey to some mishaps caused by the anterior. She is kicked out of geisha school and becomes a simple slave doing menial tasks for the geisha house.
Her salvation comes when she meets a man on the bridge with geisha companions. The man tells her to smile and buys her a snow cone. She is inspired by the man and tries hard to become a geisha. She becomes an apprentice to the other most popular geisha in town and learns the art quickly.

Yup, I have covered till the turning point of the story. I’m no sour puss that wants to spoil people’s Movie experience. Skip the next paragraph and go on to the end of this post if you are afraid of spoilers.

The story continues on her competition between her friend (adopted by the big sister) and her for the title of heir to the geisha house. There are many crazy antics to how she becomes the most popular geisha in the town. Then she goes on to earn back her debt (when a little eel likes to visit a little cave) and earns the title of heir to the geisha house.
Her happiness does not last as World War II puts everything on hold and people scramble to escape. She is kept in isolation up some hills working as a kimono maker. After the war, a man from her past approaches her to ask her to return to the life of a geisha to help secure American aid for his company.
She agrees and returns to the trade only to find the town in chaos and anyone with a face paint and kimono calling herself geisha. Americans were everywhere and the sophistication, refinement, stylishness, elegance, classiness and superiority of the trade was all gone. In its place we see simple prostitution.
Our heroine approaches her old master and asks her to help out. Together they manage to help earn secure American aid. However, what she did to secure it, was seen by the man she loved and her dreams were trashed. However, the man forgave her and told her the truth. Quote from the movie “These are not the memoirs of an empress or queen; these are memoirs of something much more different.”

Yes, I finished the review! Was it good? Give constructive comments at the tag board. Please and thank you! Back to the green tea, it was bought so I could try getting a lucky dip to win Memoirs of a Geisha poster. My friends and I bought up to 6 bottles, however some of them did not have the sticker to participate. I reasoned with the person in charge and she let us participate. What a gracious person. A goodie bag I won!! Pity the moment we crossed the ticketing barrier the usher stopped us and asked us to turn over the bottles. It was not like we were going to have a picnic in there, sigh, we turned it over nonetheless.
